I attended the Ignite: Teen Showcase this morning where six presenters spoke on a number of teen-related topics. Louise Mackie from Gyroscope related how the San Jose library created a teen space by using teens volunteers to develop the space from concept, through development to final result - thus allowing them to become fully invested in the library teen space.
Alysha Cisneros from the Ontario Library discussed her Teen College Preparedness program that set up a series of 18 workshops to help teens look at a number of options for life after high school.
Jeff Takao from Contra Costa looked at using sales techniques to encourage teens to participate in teen library programs.
Katie Stuart from Noll and Tam Architects, talked about how maker spaces can be made for any library space by using the compute-collaborate-create model.
Sam Shields from Monterey, discussed his Photography workshops for teens that utilized grant funding for cameras and a professional photographer to get teens to do more that just selfies.
Jordan Mahallati from Roseville spoke about creating a teen volunteer force that does more than just shelve books.
Many of the concepts presented were very similar to much of what we do at Rancho, but I did appreciate the different slants on these similar subject areas!
"creating a teen volunteer force that does more than just shelve books." Were there specific ideas beyond a Teen Advisory Board?
