South San Francisco has five machines which are available to check out in the library for one to six hours. They offer two dates a month - one is a 45 minute class and the second is an open lab. Sunnyvale Public Library has three machines and offers weekly open labs. Volunteers from the American Sewing Guild come and assist with classes. Mountain View Public Library has eight machines. They offer weekly open labs on Monday evenings and a monthly project.
All three of the presenters suggested to purchase new machines with warranties. Also to be sure and to do regular maintenance on the machines. Challenges are the staffing and preparations for classes.
Two of the libraries have "community sewing projects." South SF Library offers "charity bears" which are sewn and them given to a local care center. They have had as many as fifty attendees come to the class. Sunnyvale Library offers a class to sew "care kits" for the homeless.
