"OCLC Breakfast" We had a lovely breakfast with Pam Bailey, the Director for the Global and Regional Council for OCLC. W heard all about OCLC's new and innovative programs, services and information available to member libraries. Some of the highlights were an updated First Search that will enhance library staff research searches, Worldcat Discovery that is aimed at library users for the same purpose, WMS - Worldcat Management Services that will help libraries interact with each other to share data and materials, and much more. Their emphasis is on the global sharing of information and resources and they are now operating in countries all over the world.
"California State Library Discussion" with California State Librarian, Greg Lucas. Interesting presentation with the State Librarian. He began by reviewing the different functions of the State Library - from acting as a research and law library for state government, to serving as a cultural heritage center, and finally as a funding partner and local library assistance provider.
Mr. Lucas continued the discussion by looking at some of the upcoming projects, especially how we will prepare and what we will include in the next 5-year strategic plan. With the rapid advancement of technology, he is looking for a plan that will include future tech and digital literacy as well as provide service to local communities and afford access to information for all. The digital age is a library economy where our skills, services and connections to the community will provide us with an edge for the future.
"Life Hacks: Survival Skills for Teens" presented by Kayla Marie Figard from Belmont, and Erik Berman from San Jose. Continuing from the previous teen workshops I've attended that dealt with teen career and college choices, this workshop takes teen life skills to the next level. A recent article from YALSA stated that, "Many teens lack the basic skills for even a minimum wage job. And teens are indeed worried about cultivating adult life skills.
With that in mind, this workshop focused presenting workshops for teens on the life skills that they need to feel prepared to enter adult life, but that they are not getting from the education system. Such things as how to write a check or balance a budget, how to do laundry or cook a healthy meal, how to find an apartment or apply for a job are all areas where teens need assistance. By preparing and presenting workshops for teens we can help them be ready to continue life after high school.
