Three afternoon presentations

"Neighborhood Connections" by Yasmin Cardona-Byrne featured the Azusa City Library's efforts to use library resources to create their Neighborhood Connections program that provided a link for disassociated people to connect with the resources that could help them move forward in their lives. The program covered areas from housing and employment to mental health services and emergency shelters and they helped over 350 people find solutions to their problems.

"How Cultural Intelligence (CQ) Makes a Difference: Are you Culturally Competent? presented by Dr. Michele Villegran discussed the different types of cultural intelligence and how it relates to all of our social and business interactions. By looking at cultural values across the globe, we can get a better understanding of how we communicate differently and can, therefore, work to overcome miscommunication and mutual distrust. She went on to look at the seven indicators of cultural value and how they are expressed differently across different world culture clusters. Improving our CQ will result in more effective cross-cultural adaptability and decision-making and will greatly improve our ability to create a more welcoming and understanding environment in our libraries.

"Increase Participation in your Library's Adult Summer Reading Program" as presented by Michael Whitley from the Alhambra Library. He discussed the difficulties their library had in getting adults to register for the SRP and the techniques they used to increase participation. They looked at the traffic patterns in their library and by moving the adult registration desk to the ground floor by the children;s SRP area they went from having 36 adults register to over 300. With their increased activity, they then found it necessary to teen volunteers to man the adult SRP desks. This decision created a great deal more freedom for library staff to cover other library responsibilities and was well received by adult SRP patrons.
