I wanted to go to this program because it goes along with Mental Health First Aid initiative and our primary goal to provide help and compassion for people facing mental health challenges. The facilitator, Yasmin Cardona-Bryne, spoke about some of the steps the Azusa City Library took to establish a new social service assistance program. By combining library resources in collaboration with the Dept. of Social Work at Azusa Pacific University, the Neighborhood Connections program provides guidance for people who need to secure housing, food, mental health services, and more. The top 2 things I took away from the program:
*libraries can't face these challenges alone, they need help from the powerful decision makers in the community
*libraries can provide information and resource specialists to help those in need, but at the end of the day, people have to choose to seek help.
The facilitator shared success stories from people whose voices are rarely heard.
