How Cultural Intelligence (CQ) Makes a Difference

Linda and I attended this program presented by Michele Villagran, University of North Texas, to learn about Cultural Intelligence (CQ), a globally recognized way of improving effectiveness for culturally diverse situations. CQ is a person's capability to adapt to new and unfamiliar cultural settings, whether they are generational, ethnic or organizational.  Some ways to become more culturally intelligent involve learning the fundamental principles of cross-cultural interactions, such as what cultures are, how they might vary, and how they affect behavior; practicing mindfulness and paying attention in a reflective and creative way to cues; and developing a repertoire of behavioral skills that can be adapted to different situations.  The top 2 things I took away from the program:

1)  Cultural differences in the workplace are becoming more the rule than the exception, creating real challenges for businesses.

2)  The Ted Talk, The Art of Choosing by Sheena Iyengar is worth watching - it shows how we make the choices we make, and we feel about those choices.  Here's the link:
